National Preceptor Month

April has been declared National Preceptor Month by the Dietetic Practice Groups of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) known as the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) and the Nutrition and Dietetic Educators and Preceptors (NDEP). We take the time this month to recognize and celebrate these hardworking individuals who help guide dietetic students to become educated and prepared professionals in the dietetic industry.

Preceptors work with dietetic students by supervising, educating, and demonstrating the knowledge, skills, behaviors, and ethical standards required to be successful dietitians. They help plan experiences and learning activities which allow the student to gain knowledge and experience in the field. Additionally, they provide routine feedback of the student’s progress to both the student and dietetic program. Preceptors work as role models and supply students with real world experience to help them grow professionally and prepare for the Registration exam.

With the growing number of dietetic students, there is a great demand for qualified Preceptors to guide them through their supervised practice. This month is a great time to spread the word for the increased need for Preceptors and also to show your appreciations to these dedicated individuals for the time and compassion spent with students to help them to become the next generation of nutrition professionals. For more information on becoming a Preceptor, visit to contact a representative of the ACEND.
